Is an ordinary CCTV camera suitable for ANPR?

Usually not where dependable plate reads are required. Purpose-built positioning, shutter behaviour, lighting and software are important because reflective plates and moving vehicles create demanding capture conditions.

Can ANPR open a barrier for approved vehicles?

Yes, where the selected platform and barrier controls are compatible. The design should also cover exceptions, manual override, tailgating risk and what happens during a network or power fault.

Can ANPR be used across several sites?

Yes. Multi-site records and authorised management can be designed into the solution, with each entrance assessed separately for lane width, approach angle, speed and connectivity.

ANPR cameras are designed to capture reflective number plates accurately as vehicles enter, leave or move through a site. Camera position, vehicle speed, lane width, lighting and the angle of approach all matter to reliable performance.

The captured image is processed by the VARS software platform and converted into a searchable character string. The resulting information can support entry frequency reporting, dwell-time analysis, vehicle watchlists and automated actions such as opening a compatible barrier.

A system can operate as a focused vehicle-management solution or integrate with wider recording and security systems. This allows authorised users to review plate data alongside footage when investigating an incident.
