Define the job before choosing a kit
Decide which area needs coverage and whether the priority is a live view, recorded evidence, an event notification or all three. A low-activity entrance and a busy working yard may place very different demands on power, storage and data.
Manufacturer solar ranges demonstrate possible approaches, but a product headline cannot establish suitability for every UK site. Confirm that the proposed equipment supports the required recording and viewing behaviour.
Check power and mobile coverage together
Assess panel orientation, shading, battery capacity, temperature limits and the energy used by every connected component. Ask for the assumptions behind the design's endurance estimate, especially for winter conditions.
Test the proposed mobile service at the actual height and position where possible. A signal on a phone near the entrance is not enough to establish reliable connectivity at a distant camera.
- Check the effect of lighting, heaters and frequent remote viewing on demand.
- Confirm SIM, data allowance and recurring service charges.
- Plan how an engineer can safely reach the panel, battery and camera.
Plan for interruptions
Ask where recordings are stored when the mobile link is unavailable, how long they remain available and whether notifications resume automatically. Agree what happens when the battery is low. Some operating modes trade continuous recording for longer endurance, so the chosen behaviour must fit the site's requirements.
Remote access should use a supported, secured method. Don't expose the camera's management interface to the internet simply to make viewing easier.
Include installation and aftercare
Consider mounting stability, theft or tampering, access permissions and how the installation will be removed if the site is temporary. Someone needs responsibility for checking recording health, connectivity, panel condition and battery performance.
For an initial discussion, provide the location, coverage goal, operating hours and available power or network information. A survey can then establish whether solar and 4G, a wireless link or a conventional connection is the most practical route.
